Kilombero rice is an unusual and highly versatile rice whose ability to absorb flavours from vegetables, fish, and meat makes it ideally suited for risotto. Also excellent in rice salads and rice pudding, and can be used as an accompaniment to most dishes. East Africa's favourite quality rice.
Kilombero Rice has been grown for centuries in the rich soils of the Karonga region of Lake Malawi. These days the smallholder growers work in a co-operative which guarantees a fair and stable price as well as teaching the best farming methods from an environmental perspective.
Kilombero rice is best cooked using the absorbtion method, where it is cooked for 20 minutes in the right amount of water over a low heart, rather than boiling it and draining it.
